Approaches we use
Every couple comes in with different histories and different repair needs, so we don't lock into a single method. Our couples therapists are trained across the evidence-based approaches below, and your therapist will draw on whichever fits what you're actually working on. If you're not sure which would be the right starting point, that's exactly what the free 15-minute consultation is for.
-
For identifying the emotional patterns that show up as conflict, and building a more secure attachment between partners. Widely used for couples stuck in cycles that don't feel productive.
-
Practical communication tools, conflict management, and building shared meaning. Skills-based, structured, and grounded in decades of relationship research.
-
For reducing reactivity in tough conversations and staying present with each other during hard topics. Helpful when arguments escalate faster than either of you would like.
-
For couples where one or both partners are unsure about the relationship. Short-term, focused on deciding a direction rather than fixing the relationship immediately.
How to get started
Book a free consultation
Start with a free 15-minute call. No intake forms, no pressure to commit, just a conversation about what you're working on and what kind of support might actually help.
Match with a therapist
Based on the call, we'll suggest the therapist whose training and style fits what you told us. You're not locked in. If the first session doesn't feel right, we'll set you up with someone else.
Your first session
50 or 80 minutes, in person in St. John's or virtually across NL, both partners together. No test, no homework, and no need to have your relationship figured out before you show up.
Move at your own pace
Weekly, biweekly, or every few weeks. Sessions can shift between joint and individual as needed. Pause and come back whenever life demands it.
FAQs
Is couples therapy covered by insurance in Canada?
Most Canadian extended health plans that cover mental health services will cover couples therapy when provided by a registered social worker, psychologist, or counselling therapist, though limits and per-visit maximums vary by plan. In Newfoundland and Labrador, some employer benefit programs also include Employee and Family Assistance Program sessions specifically for couples. We provide receipts you can submit to your insurer, and we can help you understand what your plan covers before your first session.
Do both partners need to be on board to book couples therapy?
No, though it helps. One partner can book the free 15-minute consultation and start the conversation about what's going on, and we can guide you on how to bring your partner into the process without pressure. If your partner is skeptical of therapy or unsure whether the relationship should continue, discernment counselling is often a better first step than jumping into couples work.
